Gordon Propels Rams to Victory

Columbia, SC- The CIU men's soccer team returned home Wednesday to battle the Knights of St. Andrews University. The Rams are coming fresh off a victory over Kentucky Christian University nearly two weeks ago and were eager to get back on the pitch. After a well-fought offensive attack by the CIU, the Rams  would take home a 4-1 victory over the Knights of St. Andrews. 

Key Plays
First Half

  • CIU wasted no time in getting to work, as the offense dominated the time of possession from the first whistle. 
  • Forward Rahim Gordon put one away after a deflection off the SAU goalkeeper would take a CIU bounce. Gordon finished the opportunity to give CIU a 1-0 lead early in the 40th minute. 
  • The center judge awarded CIU with a penalty kick after a St. Andrews foul. Senior Dean Daniels elected to take the penalty, and would convert the chance giving CIU a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. 

2nd Half 

  • CIU forward Rahim Gordon found the back of the net once again after getting one on one with the SAU goalkeeper after an impressive lob pass from midfield by Romulo Barreto. Gordon gave CIU a 3-0 lead after finishing the opportunity. 
  • Moments later, St. Andrews would strike, drawing within two of the Rams lead. 
  • The Rams didn't lose their focus, as Romulo Barreto would bend a free kick from the far side of the field into the net, giving CIU a 4-1 lead, and victory over the Knights. 

Key Players 
CIU Goal Keeper - Hazel Ley 

  • The Freshman goalkeeper got his first start in goal for the Rams. After playing the full 90 minutes, Ley two key saves for CIU. 

CIU Forward - Rahim Gordon

  • The Trinidad and Tobago native was key in tonight's game, as he registered two goals for CIU.

CIU Forward - Romulo Barreto

  • Barreto not only created a scoring opportunity for Rahim Gordon in the 19th minute but also had one of the most impressive goals of the season so far, bending in a free-kick from a tough angle.
