Rams Challenged by Mariners

Columbia, SC - CIU softball returned to the diamond on Friday, as the Rams faced College of Coastal Georgia in a doubleheader at 2 PM and 4 PM. CIU looked to continue their hot start after starting the season 2-0 last weekend vs. Trinity Baptist College. The Mariners proved to be a tough test for the Rams, as CCG won both games when it was all said and done.

Game 1

How It Happened:

  • The reigning NCCAA Pitcher of the week started for CIU, as Alyssa Allender took to the mound to start the game.
  • CCG started hot, quickly retiring CIU at the top of the 1st inning. The Mariners struck first scoring six runs in the bottom of the 1st.
  • The Rams looked to answer back in the 2nd inning, getting three hits in the top of the 2nd.
  • CCG piled on the pressure in the bottom of the 2nd, gaining four hits and five runs in the process. The Mariners headed into the top of the 3rd with a commanding 11-0 lead.
  •  CIU cut the lead to ten in the 4th inning on a Cameron Puckett single to left-center, sending Robyn Andrews home.
  • The Rams attempted to battle back, but the game would be called in the 5th as CCG claimed victory.

Box Score Highlights

  • Freshman pitcher Reagan Cox saw the first action of her career as a Ram.
  • Cameron Puckett earned the first RBI of her career in the 4th inning.

Game 2

How It Happened

  • Freshman Pitcher Catie McGovern started her first game for the blue and gold.
  • CCG retired the Rams in the 1st inning. The Mariners went on to score one run in the bottom of the 1st to take an early lead. The Rams rallied defensively and held CCG to one run to retire the side.
  • CIU tied the game up in the 2nd as Freshman Haley Wilkerson advanced to home on a throwing error by CCG after Kaitlynn Creel reached on a fielder's choice.
  • The game remained a deadlock as both teams looked to gain an edge. CCG exploded in the 4th inning, with five hits, one four-run homer, totaling seven runs to give the Mariners a commanding 8-1 lead.
  • The Mariners would earn one more run in the 5th, giving them the second win of the day over CIU.

Box Score Highlights

Head Coach Sara Allen was optimistic about her team's performance despite what the final score indicated. "If you don't look at the score, I'm pleased with what we showed today. Not our best day on the mound, but our defense and bats were great," commented Allen.

CIU will play tomorrow, this time in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, as they look to battle with the Sand Sharks of USCB at 2 PM & 4 PM.
