Rams Play Tight Doubleheader with Sand Sharks

Columbia, SC - CIU softball returned to action this weekend in Bluffton, SC, taking on the Sand Sharks of the University of South Carolina Beaufort. Coming off of two losses yesterday to NAIA foe College of Coastal Georgia, the Rams looked to get off to a strong start against the Sand Sharks. The Rams went toe-to-toe in both games with USCB, but were ultimately edged in both contests.

Game 1

How it happened:

  • Alyssa Allender started the game on the mound for the Rams.
  • USCB struck first early, earning three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • CIU bats were silent early on, only registering one hit through four innings. Rams defense came up big however, holding USCB to only a three-run lead.
  • USCB extended the lead in the bottom of the 4th with a single to right-center from Freeman, giving the Sand Sharks a 4-0 lead heading into the 5th.
  • USCB struck again in the bottom of the 5th, with a fly out to center field, sending Phillips home. USCB went into the 6th inning with a comfortable 5-0 lead.
  • The game looked to be all but over until the 7th inning when CIUs bats sprung into action. The Rams saw a double to left field from Kaylyn Devaney, sending Vianka Morales home for a score, and advancing Kendall Parker to third. Kaitlynn Creel singled down the left-field line, as Kendall Parker would score the second run of the game for the Rams.
  • Despite a late push from CIU, the Sand Sharks were able to seal a victory over the Rams with a final score of 5-2.

Box Score Highlights

  • Tanaya Ellis led the Rams in batting with two hits.
  • Kaitlynn Creel and Kaylyn Devaney both had RBIs, helping score the only two runs for the Rams.

Game 2

How It Happened:

  • Freshman Catie McGovern was tabbed as the starter for the Rams.
  • Unlike the first game, the CIU bats started off red hot in the second game of the series. Tanaya Ellis began with a single, stealing 2nd base shortly after. Kaylyn Devaney singled to left-center in the ensuing at-bat, as the speedster Tanaya Ellis would make it home from second for a score. Devaney would steal second, moving into scoring position as Kendall Parker stepped up to bat. Parker singled to third, advancing Devaney to 3rd. Kaitlynn Creel singled on the next at-bat, sending Devaney home to give the Rams a 2-0 lead.
  • USCB answered the Rams hot start, with two runs in the bottom of the 1st.
  • The Rams regained the lead in the 3rd, with another RBI single from Kaitlynn Creel. Kayla Washington scored on a wild pitch in the ensuing at-bat. Heaven Zamora would give CIU a 5-2 lead with an RBI single toward the left field.
  • USCB managed to swing the momentum of the game in the 4th inning, scoring four runs. The Sand Sharks held a one-point lead over the Rams, with a score of 6-5.
  • CIU would tie the game in the 6th on a throwing error by the Sand Shark Catcher. Heaven Zamora took advantage of the mistake, advancing home to tie the game at six all.
  • The game remained tied heading into the 7th inning. The Rams were retired by the Sand Sharks, giving USCB a chance to win the ball game in the bottom of the 7th. The Rams managed to force one out but were unable to force extra innings as the Sand Sharks scored on an RBI from Dunn, winning the game 7-6.

Box Score Highlights

  • Kaitlynn Creel tallied 2 RBIs on three at-bats.
  • Heaven Zamora had an impressive day on offense, scoring one run, two hits, and an RBI.

Head Coach Sara Allen was encouraged by her team's performance against stiff competition in USCB. "This was one of the most fun days on the field I've had in a long time. We are making enormous improvements every day, and going toe-to-toe two games in a row with a top-25 team shows how competitive we are becoming," commented Allen. "Im super proud of our pitchers for bouncing back so well after yesterday, they all commanded the mound well and gave us an opportunity to win. A lot of freshmen are starting to step up, our defense is making great plays, and we're getting much tough in the box. Our energy was great all day too, and I think we did a great job of playing for the Lord. Im looking forward to getting back on the dirt next weekend."
