Rams Come Up Short Against Castleton

Myrtle Beach, SC- The CIU softball team traveled to the North Myrtle Beach Tournament on Saturday, where they pitted themselves against Castleton University, VT. After impressive results against Bluefield College on Friday, the Rams hoped to bring some momentum to Myrtle Beach. However, the Spartans of Castleton were too much for the Rams, as they would come short in both contests.  

Game 1 
How it Happened: 

  • The Spartans would strike first in the top bottom of the first, scoring four runs to jump out to an early lead. 
  • Castleton increased their lead in the 2nd, earning another run to make it 5-0. 
  • CIU found some offensive momentum in the top of the 3rd with a double from Tanaya Ellis. Ellis would score on the next at-bat as Alyssa Allender would pick up an RBI sacrifice ground out. 
  • The CIU defense shut down the Spartan offense through the next two innings, allowing no hits in six at-bats. 
  • The Rams offense would find their mark yet again in the top of the 5th as freshman Shannon Patton doubled to right-center field, scoring Allyssa Allender and Heaven Zamora in the process, making it a 5-3 game. 
  • Castleton would answer the Rams rally with two runs scored in the bottom of the 5th. 
  • Despite an attempt to rally in the 7th, the Spartans were too much for the Rams, as Castleton would go onto win with a final score of 7-3.  

Box Score Highlights 

  • Alyssa Allender pitched and led the Rams in batting. Pitching four innings, 85 pitches and striking out four batters. Allender batted in one RBI, one run and two hits on the day. 
  • Shannon Patton led the Rams in RBIs batting in two runners. 

Game Two 
How it happened: 

  • Castleton jumped out to an early lead in the 2nd inning, scoring off of an RBI single to left field. 
  • Castleton increased their lead in the 4th inning, scoring four more runs off of four hits. 
  • The Spartans didn't slow down in the 5th, earning four more runs to command a 9-0 lead over the Rams. 
  • The CIU bats woke up in the bottom of the 5th, as Ashley Chinn would pick up two RBIs off of a double, scoring Robyn Andrews and Kaylyn Devaney. 
  • The Spartans picked up another run in the 6th inning, making it 10-2 heading into the bottom of the 6th. 
  • The Rams managed to find some offensive firepower in the 6th, scoring three runs. With bases loaded, Trinity Jennings advanced from third on a walk as Kaylyn Devaney was hit by a pitch. Bases loaded, Robyn Andrews smacked a double to left-center, picking up two RBIs in the process. 
  • The Spartans would pull away from CIU in the 7th inning, scoring three more runs to beat the Rams 13-5. 

Box Score Highlights 

  • Robyn Andrews batted in two RBIs and two hits. 
  • Ashley Chinn batted in two RBIs on the game.

CIU heads to Montreat, NC, on March 5th, to battle conference foe Montreat College.
