Volleyball Picks Up Wins in Non-Conference Play
By Gordie Frierson
After a tri match at Regent University in Virginia Beach was canceled due to weather conditions from Hurricane Dorian, CIU Volleyball was still able to play two make-up matches on Saturday despite the setback. The Rams took on crosstown rival Allen University in a double header at 12:30 PM and 2 PM on Allen's campus. While both teams compete in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, both matches were considered non-conference contests.Â
In the first match the Rams orchestrated a resounding 3-0 win over the host Yellow Jackets winning all three sets by 8 or more points. All members of the CIU team saw action in match one and the Rams had strong contributions from both their bench and their starters.Â
Match two would be a different story, however, as the Yellow Jackets would win the first set 25-22. The Rams would bounce back and win the second set but the would find themselves down 2 sets to 1 after Allen would win set number 3. Despite the Rams being without key players for the final two sets, CIU would dig their heels in and pull out two gritty wins, and take the match 3 -2. The Rams have now won six straight matches.Â
What Coach Amber Haver is saying about the wins
"Allen is a very scrappy team that hustles and works hard. They did a nice job putting a block up to challenge our hitters. Today, we were able to utilize every single player on our roster. We worked on a variety of line-ups and our freshman gained a very valuable opportunity to see a significant amount of playtime. With a very young team today was extremely important for us as we head into week two of AAC play"Â
Next Up
The Rams will take on Point University on Tuesday, September 10th in Georgia.
