Gordie Frierson

Frierson enters his fifth year overseeing digital media and communication efforts for CIU after being elevated to Assistant Athletic Director for Communications in the summer of 2023. A 2017 and 2022 graduate of CIU, Frierson is the primary media contact for all of CIU's intercollegiate sports. During his tenure with the Rams, Frierson has successfully covered and promoted CIU Athletics, including twice having CIU teams featured on the front page of The State newspaper's sports section. The fall of 2021 saw the Rams gain national media attention as CIU women's soccer's Tara Collins' goal on Aug. 25 was chosen as the #3 play on ESPN' Sports Center Top10.

Before moving into his role as Sports Information Director, from 2017 to 2019, Frierson oversaw Rams Club, corporate sponsors, CIU Golf Classic sponsorships, and other fundraising initiatives. Under Frierson's guidance, Rams Club funded locker room and training room renovations in the Moore Fitness Center and assisted in the funding of the CIU softball facility. Frierson also saw success with the CIU Golf Classic helping the event raise much-needed funds to assist CIU athletics facility improvements. He continues to oversee Rams Club in his current position.

Prior to his return to CIU Athletics, Frierson worked in the marketing department of the Columbia Fireflies, the Class A affiliate of the New York Mets during the 2017 season. While with the Fireflies, he assisted in marketing promotions, community engagement, and new media.

Previous to his stint in minor league baseball, Frierson worked as a marketing intern for the Georgetown University Athletic Department. Frierson assisted the Hoyas in content creation for social media as well as helped to implement game and brand promotions.

Frierson got his start in college athletics as a student-athlete at Houghton University (N.Y.) where he was a member of the Highlander men's basketball team. Frierson would leave Houghton for CIU where he played basketball for the Rams during the 2014-2015 season. During his time as a student at CIU, he worked for the Rams as the Sports Information Assistant, where he oversaw all aspects of the athletics live stream and assisted the Sports Information Department in bringing CIURAMS.com to the SIDEARM Sports platform. Frierson holds both a Bachelor of Science in Business and Organizational Leadership and a Masters of Business Administration from CIU.

A native of Laurel, Maryland, Frierson currently resides in Columbia with his wife, Victoria.
