How it happened:

CIU women's soccer defeated Bluefield College Wednesday night. The Rams notched their third AAC match of the season and move to 5-4 on the year.

The Rams started fast with dominant play from their forwards. They set the tone early against Bluefield college with early shots from Lianna Gates and Kaylyn Hernandez. CIU was passing the ball around at will, which opened up several shooting opportunities. CIU would have seven shots, five on net in the first half. Bluefield goalkeeper Anna Flinchum tallied five saves against the Rams attackers. Despite the successful team play by the Rams, CIU was unable to convert these chances into goals. The Rams would enter the second half in a scoreless deadlock.

CIU exploded into the second half with a goal from Abi Bridge in the 46th minute. Haley Hernandez crossed a pass into the box from the corner to Lianna Gates, who would play it to Abi Bridge for a long chip in over the Bluefield goalkeeper. CIU appeared to have full momentum in the game heading into the remainder of the second half. Rams freshman Tara Collins would extend the Rams lead to 2-0 in the 66th minute. Collins was played a long pass down the sideline from Haley Hernandez. The freshman dribbled past Bluefield defenders down outside the 18 yard line, and buried a line drive kick into the net. The Rams looked to be in control of the match going into the last 20 minutes of play. However, an injury to a Bluefield player postponed play and ultimately lead to the game ending early. The Rams would leave Virginia with a 2-0 victory over Bluefield.

"Very pleased with result today."  commented Rams head coach Kara Farnsworth. "Bluefield is not an easy place to play. After last week, and the number of injuries we have, I was very encouraged to see our team battle and get a result." said Farnsworth.

CIU looks to its next game against Tennessee Wesleyan University on September 28th at 3:00 PM.
