Softball Falls in Final Conference Games

After playing down the road on Saturday night the Columbia International University Softball team was back on the field, but at home this time. The Rams welcomed Point University for a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for April 5. The Skyhawks were able to us timely hitting and good pitching to defeat the Rams in both games. The Skyhawks won game one 9-1 and game two 13-4.

Game One Highlights:
  • The Skyhawks got two runs on the board in the top of the first inning as the Rams were hurt by an error that would have stopped the inning
  • Alyssa Allender was the first baserunner for the Rams reaching base via catchers inference, but a fielders choice and strikeout stopped the inning
  • Allender got the Skyhawks to go down in order in the top of the second on a ground out and two pop outs
  • The Rams had a chance to put a run on the board in the bottom of the second. Leslie Hicks singled to shallow right and was able to advance to second. Madison Janning singled through the hole at second and moved Hicks to third with two outs, but a line drive shot caught by the Skyhawks shortstop got them out of the inning
  • Three doubles in the top of the third gave the Skyhawks two more runs and a 4-0 lead
  • Robyn Andrews led off the bottom of the third with a walk and after two strikeouts, Kayla Washington was hit by a pitch and the Rams had two runners on. Kaylyn DeVaney came up and crushed a ball to deep left that hit off the fence, but Andrews came around to score and the Rams trimmed the Skyhawks lead
  • The Skyhawks scored two more runs in the top of the fourth on a Rams error 
  • In the top of the sixth the Skyhawks would score three runs on two singles and one double to lead 9-1
  • The Rams went down in order in the bottom of the sixth and fell 9-1
Game One Box Score Highlights: Game Two Highlights:
  • Just like in the first game the Skyhawks got two runs on in the top of the first
  • With two outs in the bottom of the first Milena Picciano doubled on a line drive down the right field line and Kayla Washington followed with a single to score Picciano. Kaylyn DeVaney smacked another ball to deep center and the Rams had runners of second and third with two outs, but a strikeout halted the inning
  • Alexis Holler walked a batter in the top of the second, but got the others out and the Rams were back at bat
  • Elizabeth Allen forced a walk with one out in the bottom of the second and got to second on a Brittney Allender single. Robyn Andrews followed Allender with a single of her own as Allen came around to score and tie the game. After Allender and Andrews moved to second and third on the throw to home. Alyssa Allender joined the hit party with a double to deep left center scoring her sister and giving the Rams the lead. Kayla Washington followed with a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Andrews and the Rams were up 4-2
  • The Rams lead would be short lived as the Skyhawks answered in the top of the third with five runs to take a 7-4 lead
  • The Skyhawks would score three runs in the top of the fourth as well as the top of the fifth and win 13-4
Game Two Box Score Highlights:
  • The Rams scored four runs on eight hits, while the Skyhawks scored 13 runs on 11 hits...Robyn Andrews led the Rams with two hits, while Kayla Washington had two runs batted in...Alyssa Allender and Andrews picked up the other runs batted in...Alicia Wallick and Alexis Holler each saw time of the mound for the Rams...The Skyhawks were led by Shatima Smith with three hits.
Up Next: The Rams will close out their season on Saturday at home against USC-Beaufort. The Rams will also honor their lone senior Mackenzie Tindle before the game.
