Rams Storm Back but Fall Short in Overtime

The Columbia International University Men's Basketball team took to the road looking to snap a two game conference losing streak in a pivotal game against Reinhardt University. The Rams were down at half, but stormed back in the second half to force overtime. In overtime the Eagles hit a couple more shots and downed the Rams 108-102.

1st Half Highlights:
  • The Rams got the game started with the first two points as Corey Benton found Elijah Spalding
  • Over the next minute the Eagles would score five points to take the lead, but a three by Tyrone Dantzler Jr. would tie the game at five
  • After a miss by the Eagles, Arthur Pearson grabbed the defensive rebound and took it right down the court and hit a three to give the Rams the lead back
  • The Eagles would regain the lead, but three straight jumpers by Eric Graham and Pearson gave the Rams the lead back
  • The Eagles then went on a 13-2 run to take the lead back from the Rams
  • After the Eagles took a double digit lead the Rams were able to trim it back to single digits a couple times, but with just under four and hafl minutes left in the half the Rams were only down by seven after jumpers by Jacob Cook and Pearson
  • The Rams closed out the half with two free throws by Eric Graham, but went into the half down, 41-32
2nd Half Highlights:
  • The Eagles came out of the break and took a double digit lead, but five straight points by Benton brought the Rams back within eight
  • After the five points by Benton the Eagles hit two straight threes to take another double digit lead
  • The Eagles continued to hold onto their double digit lead for most of the half, but with with just under nine minutes left in the game back-to-back threes by Brandon Doss brought the Rams within seven
  • Just a minute and a half later and the Rams were within one point of taking the lead back thanks to jumpers by Tajae Anderson and Corey Benton
  • The Eagles hit a three to go back up by four, but two jumper by Benton and Pearson tied the game at 76 with five and a half minutes left
  • The next four points went to the Eagles and regained their lead
  • The two teams traded baskets and the Eagles were still up by four, but a three by Anderson pulled the Rams within one
  • The Rams would take the lead back ten seconds later on two free throws by Benton
  • The Eagles would hit a jumper to take the lead back, but another free throw by Pearson tied the game
  • With just over a minute left Benton was able to hit a three of a pass by Pearson to take a 87-84 lead
  • The Eagles would tie the game at 87 with a three of their own with forty-four seconds left
  • The Rams called a timeout with twenty-five seconds left in the game and drew up a play for the win. Pearson was able to drive, but his step back jumper fell just short and it was onto overtime
Overtime Highlights:
  • Each team struggled out of the gate in overtime, but the Eagles would score the first five points to go up 92-87
  • Eric Graham gave the Rams their first points and pulled them within three
  • The Rams and Eagles continued to go back and forth with free throws, but in the end the Eagles would win 108-102
Box Score Highlights:
  • The Rams shot the ball well as they were 52.1% (38-of-73) from the floor and were 15-of-34 from beyond the arc...The Rams hit 60.6% of their shots in the second half to come back...The Eagles shot 48.6% and were 25-of-28 from the free throw line...The Rams had 42 points in the paint and 34 points of 24 Eagle turnovers...The Eagles led on the board as the had a 43 to 31 advantage...The Rams were able to dish out 20 assists...Corey Benton led the Rams with 31 points and had five rebounds and four assists...Eric Graham had 19 points off the bench...Arthur Pearson had 17 points, five rebounds, and four assists...Elijah Spalding and Brandon Doss each had eight points...Samuel Bunkley led the Eagles with 24 points
Up Next: The Rams will be back in action on Thursday when they host Montreat College at 7:30 pm. The Rams will also honor their lone senior Damian Hurta before the game.
