CIU Men's soccer returned to Sessions Field on Tuesday night to do battle with the Cavaliers of Montreat College. After a high scoring contest, the Rams would come up short to the AAC first place Cavaliers.
The Rams started fast with forwards, putting pressure on the Montreat backline early. Both sides looked even in the contest until the 22nd minute when the Cavaliers would be awarded a penalty kick. Cavalier forward Carlos Hernandez converted the opportunity to give Montreat the 1-0 lead. The Rams answered with a goal from Marcos Da Paz in the 39th minute from a quick free-kick just outside the 18. The Rams would head to halftime tied 1-1.
Momentum was even coming into the second half as both teams looked to gain an edge. The Cavaliers converted an opportunity from Carlos Hernandez in the 68th minute of play to give the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead. CIU bounced back and answered with a goal from
Romulo Barreto, who would dribble between 3 defenders and blast the ball past the Montreat goal keeper. The game remained tied and looked like it was heading to overtime until Montreat forward Francisco Prado scored his 2nd goal of the night in the 88th minute. The Rams would fall short to the Cavaliers 3-2.
CIU men's soccer hopes to bounce back against Trinity Baptist College this Thursday at 7:00PM.
