Rams Sweep Season Series with Koalas

By Gordie Frierson

COLUMBIA, SC - CIU volleyball traveled a few short miles down the road this evening to compete in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match. Tonight would be the third meeting of the teams so far this year with the Rams getting the best of the Koalas in the first two matchups. This evening would be much of the same as the Rams blanked Columbia 3 sets to 0 en route to a season series sweep.

How It Happened:

CIU would be in control of the set from the beginning taking a 12-6 lead. Seven points later and a handful of aces from Andrea Salas and the Rams would have commanding 19-7 advantage. The Koalas would make a small surge but CIU would win by double-digits 25-14.

The Rams took a 15-8 lead in the 2nd set. Megan Lung and Gabriela Vega would push the Rams advantage to 19-11 however, Columbia stormed back to tie the set at 23-23. The Koalas stumbled with an attack error and Mackenzie Sanchez sealed the set with an ace 25-23.

Consecutive aces from Carla Cauchi gave the Rams an early 5-2 edge in the 3rd set. Lily Tang and De'Asija Harden would contribute with kills to pace the Rams while Andrea Salas would record yet another ace. Despite a strong Rams attack the Koalas would stay close 22-20. However more errors by Columbia would lead to the deciding point coming from Bruna Barrozo on an ace gave the Rams the set win, 25-20.

Box Score Highlights

  • Andrea Salas would lead the Rams with a season-high 4 aces.
  • The Rams recorded 10 service aces to the Koalas 4.
  • Lily Tang filled the stat sheet with 16 digs and 6 kills.
  • Freshman Gabriela Vega continued to prove herself as a defensive force with 3 blocks on the evening.

What Coach Haver is saying

"We've been working really hard on minimizing errors and the girls did a nice job focusing on that tonight. Freshman Meg Lung, only had 4 errors in each of our last two matches. With 22 and 15 kills respectively, she's proving to be an essential part of our offense. Her hitting percentage has remained at least .360 the last three games.  Very respectable."

"Additionally, the girls have been really motivated to keep the number one spot in the country for aces.  Aggressive serving tonight allowed us to mark ten more aces for the cause. We're pretty excited about that."

Up Next

CIU will travel to Georgia on Saturday to play a tri-match against conference opponent Reinhardt University at 1 PM and Faulkner University (AL) at 3 PM.
