Rams Upset Cavaliers in Four Sets

Columbia, SC - Saturday afternoon saw the CIU Rams pick up one of their biggest wins of the season. The Rams entered their match with the Montreat College Cavaliers after losing Friday evening to the Milligan College Buffs. CIU's 3-1 win over Montreat helped solidify their place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Standings and keep their playoff hopes alive.

How It Happened

CIU entered the match ready to play and lead for the majority of the first set. Montreat would come as close as 17 -14, but the Rams would stave off the comeback bid and win set one 25-19. Megan Lung would lead the Rams in the first sent with an astounding ten kills. Set two would continue to be hard-fought, but the Cavaliers would pull way 25-15.

Set three would be back and forth, and the Rams would find themselves leading only 21-20. However, behind a service from Bruna Barrozo and kills from Lily Tang pushed the Rams to victory 25-20. The fourth would prove to be the most competitive as CIU would narrowly pull out the set win 25-23. Megan Lung and De'Asija Harden combined for ten kills in the final set, the majority coming off setups from Mackenzie Sanchez.

Game Notes
  • Mackenzie Sanchez's 43 assists would be enough to push her over the 1,000 assist mark on the season.
  • Megan Lung continued her hot streak having her third consecutive game with 20 or more kills.
  • Saturday afternoon was the Ram's first win over the Cavaliers in program history, dropping their only other match to Montreat during the 2018 season.
  • Coach Amber Haver is two wins away from having 10 wins in the AAC in only her second season.
