Heartbreak in the Finals

After advancing the the NCCAA South Region Championship game after defeating Brewton-Parker College on Thursday. The Rams were back at Sessions Field to take on the Warner University Royals. The Rams were the number two seed, while the Royals were the one seed. It was an amazing game as the two teams advanced to penalty kicks after 110 minutes. After going back and forth the Royals won the NCCAA South Region Championship, 4-3 on penalty kicks.

1st Half Highlights:
  • The Royals got off the first shot off the game, but Sam Wammock was there to make a save
  • Kaylyn Hernandez got the off the Rams first shot of the game, but it sailed high
  • The Royals went on attack, but no shots went on goal as the team remained scoreless
  • Mikki Olson just missed a chance to put the Rams ahead as her shot went wide
  • At the half the teams were scoreless
2nd Half Highlights:
  • Over the first four minutes of the second half the Royals got off two shots, but Sam Wammock was always there
  • In a two minute span Rebecca Giancana and Sotiria Tsilionis got off shots, but the Royals keeper saved them
  • The teams went back and forth for most of the half
  • One of the Rams best chances came off the foot of Kylie Chandler as her shot was just tipped over the crossbar by the keeper
  • After 90 minutes the two teams were still scoreless
1st Overtime Highlights:
  • The first overtime was all Royals as they got off three shots as two went high and the other was saved by Wammock
2nd Overtime Highlights:
  • The Rams got a corner in the first minute of the overtime
  • The Royals would get off four shots in the ten minutes, but the Rams best chance went just wide from Tsilionis
Penalty Kick Highlights:
  • Rebecca Giancana stepped to the line first and deposited the shot, but the Royals matched her goal
  • Taylor Kyle was the next Ram and put the ball in the back off the net, but the Royals matched it again
  • McKenzie Miller was the next Ram, but the Royals keeper made a phenomenal save. The Royals stepped to the line, but Wammock came up big and made a huge diving save
  • Tsilionis came to the line looking to put the Rams ahead, but the ball rang off the post. The Royals came up looking to take the advantage and sank the shot
  • Esther Edwards was the next Ram to take a penalty kick. Edwards calmly stepped up and sank the shot to give the Rams a chance. The Royals were looking to put the game away if they sank the kick. The Royals sank the shot and celebrated their championship
Season and Tournament Awards:
  • All-Region: The Rams had a lot of players that could have been named All-Region, but the south region coaches selected three Rams. Sotiria Tsilionis, Esther Edwards, and Madisyn Dupree were all selected as All-Region players
  • All-Tournament: The Rams finished the tournament in second place and had three players selected to the All-Tournament team. Tsilionis, Wammock, and Edwards were the Rams selected for their efforts in the tournament
Up Next: The Rams will wait to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida.
