After a midweek loss to Reinhardt the men's soccer team also traveled to Montreat to take on the Cavaliers in game two of a doubleheader. Montreat was looking to continue it's win streak after defeating Bob Jones, and one again both teams made big plays late Saturday night.
Hugo Lemus got the start at goalie for the Rams as the game began. Karabo Mahlatsane got the first shot for CIU with 34:55 left, but shot was saved by the keeper.
Rahim Gordon helped the Rams knock on the door getting three shots of his own in that were also saved by the keeper. But with 10:47 left to go, a foul on the Rams in the box found themselves up for a penalty kick and senior
Victor Maron sent his shot in the net and put thr Rams up 1-0 going into halftime.
In the second half, Montreat came out hard and got off multiple shots but Lemus made several great saves to keep the Rams in the lead. Montreat found themselves with one final corner kick with six seconds remaining, but they couldn't connect and the Rams held on for the crucial AAC road victory.
Lemus was awarded the shutout, grabbing nine saves on the night. Gordon led the team in shots with five, three of them on goal. The win puts the Rams at 7-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while Montreat drops to 5-6-2 and 2-4-1 in conference play.
Next up the Rams get the day off before heading on the road for a Monday night matchup with Bluefield College in a Battle of the Rams with kickoff time set for 7 PM.
