BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — CIU men's soccer used a pair of second-half goals to secure a 2-0 road win over Bluefield University on Saturday evening at the East River Complex.
Saturday's contest marked the first of two meetings between the Rams and Bluefield this season. The matchup did not count toward Appalachian Athletic Conference play, while the return meeting at CIU later this season will serve as the conference contest between the two programs.
After a scoreless opening half, CIU (1-1-1) broke through in the 58th minute. Nathan King found the back of the net at the 57:06 mark off assists from William Lippiatt and Landon Guevara, giving the Rams a 1-0 advantage.
The Rams continued to apply pressure following the opening goal. CIU produced 10 shots in the second half after recording three in the opening 45 minutes and finished the night with a 13-6 advantage in total shots. CIU also held a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.
Winner Muya provided the insurance goal in the 75th minute, scoring at 74:43 to double the CIU lead to 2-0.
CIU's defense made the two-goal advantage stand. Goalkeeper Vasilios Diakomihalis played all 90 minutes and made two saves to record the clean sheet. The Rams held Bluefield to just two shots on goal for the match.
The Rams return home Tuesday, Sept. 8, when they host (RV) Southeastern University at 6 p.m.
