Rams hit 20 wins by mid-March for first time in program history with sweep of Benedict

COLUMBIA, S.C.- CIU softball swept a nonconference doubleheader against Benedict College on Tuesday afternoon, winning 8-0 in the opener and 15-0 in game two. The Rams set the tone early in both contests, using a three-run first inning in game one and a 10-run second inning in game two to secure back-to-back run-rule victories. With the sweep, CIU reached its 20th win of the season.

Game One: CIU 8 Benedict 0: CIU jumped on Benedict early, scoring three runs in the first inning behind an RBI single from Lilli Petty and a two-run double by Hannah Murphy. The Rams added two more in the second, including an RBI single from Caydon Thompson and a sacrifice fly from Murphy to make it 5-0. After a scoreless third and fourth, CIU closed the game in the fifth inning with three runs—highlighted by an RBI single from Tristan Phillips and Petty's RBI double—to secure the run-rule victory.

Petty led the team with three hits, including two doubles. Murphy added two doubles and drove in three runs, while Phillips and Thompson each recorded two hits. In the circle, Stewart earned the complete-game shutout, allowing four hits and striking out three.

Game Two: CIU 15 Benedict 0: CIU wasted no time getting on the board, scoring three runs in the first inning behind RBI hits from Thompson, Abigail Guthrie, and Gabriella Czuczuk. The Rams then broke the game open in the second inning with a 10-run outburst, capitalizing on multiple Benedict errors and six hits, including a two-run double from Thompson and RBI knocks from Czuczuk, Carmella Korte, and Guthrie to take a commanding 13-0 lead. CIU added one run in the third on an RBI single from Katie Rhyne and another in the fourth on an RBI double from Phillips to lead 15-0 heading into the fifth inning.

Phillips led the way with three hits and two RBIs, while Thompson drove in five runs and recorded two doubles. Guthrie added two extra-base hits and drove in two runs, and Rhyne chipped in two hits and two RBIs. In the circle, Czuczuk earned the win, allowing one hit with seven strikeouts over four innings, while Emily Sampson finished the game to complete the shutout.
