BARBOURVILLE, KY. - CIU baseball extended their winning streak to seven games Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Union Commonwealth University (Ky.) in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series that was shortened from three games to two due to wet field conditions. CIU rallied for a 14-10 win in the opener before securing a 6-4 comeback victory in game two at Jerry Carey Stadium. With the sweep, the Rams improved to 8-6 in AAC play.
Game One: CIU 14 Union 10: The Bulldogs scored a run in the first and third innings, but CIU took their first lead in the fourth inning. Daniel Sidoti opened the frame with a double, and Ian D'Amico followed with an RBI double to score the Rams' first run. Aiden Pomnitz then delivered a two-run single to right field, giving CIU a 3-2 advantage. The Rams continued the momentum in the fifth. Aaron Guthrie drove in two runs with a single, Pomnitz added an RBI double, and Jennings Greene capped the inning with a two-run single as CIU stretched the lead to 8-2.
After Union Commonwealth cut into the lead with a run in the seventh, the Rams responded with six runs in the ninth to extend the margin to 14-3. Union Commonwealth mounted a late comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth, scoring seven runs, but Collin Otte recorded the final outs to secure the victory.
Sidoti led the offense with three hits and three runs scored, while Guthrie finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Pomnitz added two hits and three RBIs, and Kai Smith collected two hits and drove in three runs, including a three-run double in the ninth inning. Campbell Denton earned the win for the Rams, tossing four innings in relief and allowing one run while striking out four. CIU finished with 15 hits in the win, while Union Commonwealth recorded 11 hits.
Game Two: CIU 6 Union 4: The Rams struck first in the second inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues. Aiden Pomnitz singled and later scored on an error, while Eli Musgraves added an RBI single to help CIU take a 3-0 lead. Union Commonwealth chipped away with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 4-3 advantage.
CIU answered in the top of the seventh. After Sidoti drew a walk, Corbin Wright singled to put two runners aboard. Pomnitz tied the game with an RBI single, and Ethan Hynicka followed with a two-run single to center field to give the Rams a 6-4 lead.
Pomnitz led the offense with two hits and an RBI, while Hynicka provided the key blow with two RBI off the bench. Manuel Geisel started on the mound for CIU, striking out six in five innings of work. Collin Otte earned the win in relief, pitching the final two innings and allowing one run while striking out three.
