COLUMBIA, S.C. — CIU men's basketball surged in the second half to defeat Bryan College (Tenn.) 106–91 on Saturday afternoon at the Moore Fitness Center in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.
Bryan held a 48–41 halftime lead, but the Rams erupted for 65 second-half points behind efficient shooting and a barrage from beyond the arc to take control. CIU shot 68.8 percent from the field after the break and connected on nine three-pointers in the final 20 minutes to pull away.
Johnny Whysong recorded his third career triple-double, finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists to lead a balanced CIU attack. Will Kelly paced the Rams with 25 points, including five three-pointers, while Jeffrey Clark, II added 19 points and four rebounds. JJ Vaughan delivered a breakout performance off the bench with 23 points, drilling seven three-pointers, tied for the second-most made threes in a game in program history.
As a team, CIU knocked down 14 three-pointers, tied for the fourth-most in a single game in program history. The Rams finished shooting 58.5 percent from the field and totaled 25 assists on 38 made baskets.
Rhett Warga added 11 points and four rebounds, and James Davis chipped in nine points and four assists as CIU outscored Bryan 65–43 in the second half to secure the conference victory.
CIU returns to action Wednesday, traveling to face Columbia College at 7:30 p.m. ET.
