COLUMBIA, S.C. – Columbia International University Athletics has announced the hiring of Jarrius "Jay" Spearman as its new Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. Spearman brings more than a decade of experience in athletic development, performance training, and mentorship to the Rams' athletic department.
A former University of South Carolina football student-athlete, Spearman has dedicated his career to helping student-athletes reach their full potential. He most recently served as the Director of Athletic Development at Laurens District 55 High School, where he collaborated with coaches to design and implement progressive strength and conditioning programs, while also assisting student-athletes with NCAA eligibility preparation.
Prior to his work in Laurens, Spearman spent eight years at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia as Director of Strength and Conditioning. There, he developed school-wide training programs for grades 5–12, launched the school's first internship program in strength and conditioning, and worked closely with coaches and athletic trainers to design individualized return-to-play programs.
Spearman is also the founder of
Bigger Than Sports, SC, a nonprofit initiative focused on faith, mentorship, and community service. Through this platform, he has created youth camps, symposiums, and service drives that impact students and families across South Carolina.
A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength & Conditioning Association, Spearman also holds certifications in functional movement screening and CPR/AED/First Aid. He earned multiple degrees from the University of South Carolina, including a Master of Science in Exercise Science and a Master of Public Health in Health Service Policy and Management.
In addition to his coaching and academic background, Spearman is an accomplished author and public speaker. He has written four children's books, including
I Am Chosen To Be A Friend and
I Am Chosen To Learn, as well as a devotional book,

Athletic Business for his expertise in developing student-athletes.
