Diakomihalis shuts out Pioneers as CIU's first conference match ends in draw

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — CIU men's soccer battled to a scoreless draw on the road Wednesday afternoon against Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) foe Spartanburg Methodist at Nash Soccer Field.

The Rams (1-1-1, 0-0-1 AAC) leaned on the steady play of goalkeeper Vasilios Diakomihalis, who turned away 11 shots, including a penalty save late in the first half to keep the contest level.

CIU generated 14 shots with eight on frame, led by Eric Calderon who tallied four attempts and struck the crossbar in the opening minutes. Ian Rau and Christian Cruz each forced multiple saves, while Nathan King and Josue Pirela also provided scoring chances.

The Pioneers (0-3-1, 0-1-1 AAC) pressed heavily in the second half, outshooting CIU 12-8, but Diakomihalis' goalkeeping and the back line held firm. Spartanburg Methodist finished with 17 shots overall, while goalkeeper Isaiah Simmons posted eight saves.

The Rams return to the pitch to face Union Commonwealth on Saturday, Sept. 13. at 7:00 p.m. ET at Sessions Field
