Softball clashes with Cavaliers in low-scoring DH

MONTREAT, N.C. - CIU softball made the trek up to western North Carolina on Saturday as they faced Montreat College in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader. Runs were hard to come by in both games as the Rams fell 2-1 in game one and 1-0 in game two. CIU moves to 17-21 overall and 10-12 in the conference.

Game One: MC 2 CIU 1: CIU was scoreless until the sixth inning when Megan Stolzenbach singled, followed by a Caydon Thompson RBI double, which brought the score to 2-1. Carmella Korte added a single in the seventh, but it wasn't enough to even the score.

Box Score Notes:

  • Abby Ragan started in the circle, tossing 4.1 innings and recording four strikeouts. Miranda Fulmer did not give up a hit in 1.2 innings of relief, collecting two strikeouts.
  • Both Lilli Petty and Stolzenbach picked up two hits, while Thompson tallied CIU's only RBI.

Game Two: MC 1 CIU 0: The Rams had several scoring opportunities in game two, with back-to-back singles coming from Sophia Noriega and Abigail Guthrie in the third inning. CIU's next offensive burst came in the fifth inning when Noriega advanced to third on a Stolzenbach single. The game moved into extra innings, with both teams scoreless. Guthrie added a base hit in the eighth inning, but it was ultimately the Cavaliers who got on the board in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Box Score Notes:

  • Fulmer notched three strikeouts in three innings, while Isabella Davis added five strikeouts in five innings of action.
  • Guthrie and Noriega each added two hits in game two.

Up Next:  The Rams will stay in the Midlands to face Columbia College (S.C.) on April 15 in an AAC doubleheader set to start at 4:00 p.m. ET.
