Baseball sweeps Bruins in non-conference series

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - CIU baseball swept the series against Carolina University (7-13) after winning the Saturday doubleheader. The Rams (15-13) dominated the Bruins with a 19-1 win in game two, fueled by explosive hitting. In a tighter game three, CIU secured a 4-2 victory with clutch late-inning hits.

GAME TWO: CIU 19 CU 1: The Rams lead off the game with five runs in the first and four in the second to take a 9-0 lead over the Bruins. CIU's biggest inning of the day game in the third, where they scored nine runs, highlighted by a three-run homer from Graham Peeler and a grand-slam from Tre Williams. The Bruins scratched one run in the fourth, but that was the only run allowed by the Rams' pitching staff. CIU went down quietly for the remainder of the contest but scratched one more run in the top of the seventh after a bases-loaded walk.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Williams and Peeler led the team with three hits.

  • Williams is tied for second in program history for single-game RBI with six.

  • Noah Davis picked up his third win of the season with a season-high seven strikeouts.

GAME THREE: CIU 4 CU 2: The final game in the series was a pitcher's dual compared to the first two games. Both teams went scoreless until the Bruins struck first in the fourth. The Rams tied it up in the sixth with an RBI single from Eric Doyon, but Carolina responded with a solo shot to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame. In their final at-bat, Kai Smith singled to score two runs, followed by Graham Peeler scoring on a wild pitch to put CIU in front 4-2. Connor Kirkley took the mound in the bottom of the seventh to strike out the side and secure the series switch.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Smith and Doyon led the team with two hits.

  • Drake Thames secured his fourth win of the season with 11 strikeouts, ranking #2 in program history for single-game strikeouts.

  • Kirkley recorded his second save with three strikeouts in 1.0 IP.

Up Next: The Rams are back on the road next weekend, March 28-29, for a conference series against St. Andrews University (N.C.), with the first pitch slated for 3 p.m. on Friday.
