Friday night split gives Rams first win over Lions

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Rams continue their history season with a Friday night split against Bryan College (Tenn.) (15-5, 8-3 AAC). This is the first time in program history that CIU (10-14, 4-6 AAC) has beaten the Lions and the third time this season that the Rams have beaten a conference component for the first time.

Game One: CIU 7 Bryan 6: The Lions scratched first in the top of the second, but the Rams responded with an RBI single from Sophia Noriega to tie the game. A two-run homer put Bryan back in front in the top of the fifth. The lead was shortlived as CIU quickly evened the score with an RBI double from Abigail Guthrie and a sac fly from Mackenzie Brown. Both teams scored two in the sixth inning to enter the final frame knotted 5-5. Neither team scored in the seventh to force extra innings. Brenau hit a solo homer in the top of the frame to lead 6-5. A fielder's choice from Macey Drye pushed a run across to even the score, and the Rams took advantage of a Lions' throwing error to score the winning run.

Box Score Highlights:

Game Two: Bryan 5 CIU 0: Bryan quickly took a 2-0 lead after three hits and a walk. Stolzenbach led off the first inning with a single but was left stranded. Both teams put blanks up for the second and third innings, but the Lions added another in the top of the fourth and three in the top of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. The Rams struggled to put runners on and move them around to fall 5-0 in game two.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Stolzenbach led the team with two hits.

  • Drye recorded the only other hit for the Rams.

  • Sarah Dority closed out the game with two strikeouts.

Up Next: The Rams have a quick turnaround, taking on St. Andrews University (N.C.) tomorrow, Saturday, March 22, at 1 and 3 p.m. EST.
