Softball wins Battle of the Rams with sweep over Bluefield (Va.)

COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU softball (7-9, 1-1 AAC) had a quick turnaround from a big Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) win last night to take on the Bluefield University (Va.) Rams (1-3, 0-2 AAC) Saturday afternoon. The Rams walked away with their first conference sweep and improved to 9-9 overall and 3-1 in AAC play.

Game One: CIU 4 BU 0: After a scoreless two innings, CIU got on the board after a sac fly from Macey Drye in the third. The Rams extended their lead on a Lilli Petty three-run homer (4-0). CIU put runners into scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings but could not push any more runs across. Miranda Fulmer took the mound in the seventh and recorded three straight outs to end the contest.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Abby Ragan allowed just two hits with 11 strikeouts to tie the program's single-game record.

  • Petty led the team with two hits and three RBI.

  • Megan Stolzenbach reached base three times via walk.

Game Two: CIU 7 BU 3: CIU quickly took a 2-0 lead in the first after a double from Carmella Korte and a single from Petty. However, Bluefield responded with three runs to take a 3-2 lead in the second. CIU threatened to score again in the third with singles from Korte and Hannah Murphy, but a pop-out ended the inning. Both teams went scoreless until a two-run homer from Stolzenbach gave the Rams a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth. CIU added three more in the fifth after two bases-loaded walks and an RBI single from Abigail Guthrie (7-3). Both teams went scoreless for the remainder of the contest to give CIU victory in game two.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Korte led the team with three hits, while Stolzenbach led with two RBI.

  • Isabella Davis secured her fourth win of the season, with Raleigh Stewart recording her first save.

  • This is the third time in program history that the Rams have hit home runs in three consecutive games.
