Garris throws shutout through six innings to help Rams record program's 100th win

COLUMBIA — Head Coach Jonathan Johnson and the CIU baseball program posted their 100th all-time win as the Rams used a decisive first inning to take down Montreat (N.C.) 8-4 on Friday evening. The win is crucial to the Rams' quest to secure a berth in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament, as CIU moves to 13-24 overall and 7-12 in the conference.

Game Summary: Scott McDonough put the Rams in front in the bottom of the first with a two-RBI double. The lead continued to grow after an RBI groundout from Collin Greer; Shane Hammonds capped the inning with a single platting McDonough. The advantage ballooned to 6-0 after Aiden Pridgen notched an RBI double in his first at-bat (fifth inning), and McDonough continued to shine, adding another RBI single to his season total (sixth inning). The Cavaliers tacked on their only four runs in the seventh, thanks in part to a two-run shot over the left field wall. However, the Rams did not step off the gas, as they scratched two more at the bottom of the inning, thanks to a James Lovera two-RBI single. Collin Otte entered in the seventh and was impressive on the hill as the Rams marquee closer helped the Rams hold on for the victory.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Matthew Garris had a career evening, not allowing a run through six innings while posting six strikeouts and giving up four hits. Garris started the game and posted the win.
