COLUMBIA - An admirable offensive effort in the second inning of CIU baseball's series-opening game on Thursday propelled the Rams to the 10-6 win over Truett McConnell (Ga.). The win sets CIU up for their first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series win, with games two and three slated for Friday. The win evens the all-time series with the Bears as both teams hold four wins across eight games. The Rams move to 6-15 overall and 3-7 in AAC action.
Game Summary: The Bears scratched one across and held the Rams scoreless in the first inning. The tide would turn in the second inning as the Bears walked four CIU batters in the bottom of the frame, and both Scott McDonough and Collin Greer picked up two-RBI singles to headline a seven-run inning. The Rams then tacked on two more in the bottom of the third as James Lovera chalked up his own two-RBI single to put CIU ahead 9-1. The Bears did battle back and cut the advantage down to 9-5. Lovera responded in the sixth with a triple that set up an RBI single from Kai Smith. Despite the tying run coming up to the plate in the eighth inning, the Ram's pitching staff held off TMU and held on to the 10-6 victory.
