COLUMBIA - A combined 41 runs and 35 hits made for nearly five hours of baseball on Tuesday, as CIU was upended by Toccoa Fall (Ga.) 21-20 in a midweek matchup. The 13 innings played are the most at Miller Field in an intercollegiate game since the facility's construction in 2020. Despite the loss, the Rams still hold an 8-5 all-time series lead over the Screaming Eagles. CIU falls to 6-18 on the season with the loss.
Game Summary: TFC 21 CIU 20: Scoring came early and often as the Rams trailed Toccoa 13-5 entering the bottom of the fifth inning. CIU responded to start the bottom of the frame with a double from Scott McDonough, who scored Shane Hammonds. The Screaming Eagles struggled to control their pitches as several Rams reached base on balls, prompting singles from Hammond and Austin Paradise to bring in runs. CIU concluded the scoring in the eight-run inning with a McDonough sacrifice fly that scored James Lovera (13-13).
As both teams traded blows, the Rams found themselves entering the bottom of the ninth down 17-16. With two outs against them, CIU put two runners in scoring position thanks to a double from McDonough. Colton Lopez would do the rest, bringing in the tying run with the two-out RBI single.
The Rams faced a similar situation in the bottom of the twelfth, trailing 20-17. Veteran players stepped up once again as an RBI-single from Lovera and a two-RBI single from Hammonds tied the game.
However, despite the valiant Rams' effort, Toccoa scored on a wild pitch at the top of the thirteenth, and the Rams were unable to respond at the bottom of the frame, resulting in a one-run extra-innings loss.
