CIU hits 26 free throws on the way to 95-87 upending of Eagles

COLUMBIA - CIU men's basketball was picked to finish third in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Preseason Poll, and that prediction will come to fruition as the Rams clinched the third place spot in the conference with a 95-87 victory over Reinhardt University (Ga.). The Rams (17-10, 16-7 AAC) swept the season series with the Eagles (12-14, 11-12 AAC) Wednesday, as they now have eight wins to just six losses in the all-time series with Reinhardt.

After CIU took a 16-15 (13:37) on a DiAnthony Heathcock slam, the Eagles would respond to hold the advantage for the next 13 minutes of the first half. The Rams did pull ahead right before the intermission on a Bryce Causey bucket with 37 ticks left on the clock (43-41). The Eagles responded with a triple in the waning moments of the half to lead 44-43.

The Rams began to open the game up in the second frame with a Christian Howard layup (9:59) to put CIU up 69-63. Four minutes later, the Rams grew the lead to 78-71 on Causey's triple to take their largest lead of the game up to that point. The Eagles trimmed the deficit to 86-83 with 2:13 remaining, but the Rams stayed stout defensively down the stretch to hold on to the eight-point win.

Jalen Brinson has been on a scoring tear of late, as he shot 50% from the field to score 21 points on the evening. Veteran guard Darrian Oates scored 18 points as he and Brinson combined to go 16-of-18 from the foul line.

All five of the Rams starters scored in double-figures, with Howard scoring 16, Heathcock notching 14, and Causey posting 12.

The Rams knocked down 26 free throws to go 86% from the foul line while additionally shooting 49% from the field.

What Coach Tony Stockman is saying: "When you play a physical team like we did tonight, you have to stay composed and hit free throws. We did both of those things, which resulted in the game going in our favor."

Up Next: The Rams wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 24 with a home game versus Johnson (Tenn.) at 2:00 p.m. EST. Senior recognition will take place prior to tip-off.
