CIU takes care of business in AAC tourney quarterfinal

KINGSPORT - CIU women's volleyball remains untested in the 2024 WinWon Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) after a quarterfinal win over No. 8-seeded Truett McConnell (Ga.) on Friday. CIU swept the Bears 24-10, 25-11, 25-15 in a match that was never in question as CIU will make its fourth consecutive semifinal appearance on Saturday with the goal of reaching yet another AAC tournament title match.

Friday's quarterfinal featured several runs by both teams, but the Rams ultimately displayed why they are the team to beat in the tournament, taking set one and then handily winning the final two sets.

Hanah Weiss, Katie Camp, and Hadassah Davis overwhelmed the Bears with their attacking prowess. Camp and Weiss each had 11 kills, and Davis posted nine. The Rams hit .250 overall as a team.

Gabriela Vega was a force for CIU with eight kills and four blocks, while Lydia Gustafson had a similar performance with six kills and three blocks. Davis was a notable presence at the net as well, with five block assists. The defensive specialist duo of Kelcey Mangum and Lexabel Rojas protected CIU's side of the floor as Mangum posted 22 digs and Rojas tallied 16. Bellamy Fennell found herself with double-digit digs, penciling in ten.

Setter Melissa Campos Soto recorded a double-double with 20 assists and 12 digs, while Kamelia De Jesus was a dig shy of her own double-double with 17 assists and nine digs.

The win marks CIU's 30th of the season, as the Rams (30-2) have now won 30 or more games for the fourth straight year.

Up Next: CIU will play the winner of Johnson (Tenn.) and Bluefield (Va.) in a semifinal matchup slated for 11 a.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 16. The Royals and [Bluefield] Rams play one another in a quarterfinal showdown on Friday at 4:00 p.m. ET.
