Women's Soccer records clean sheet versus Brewton-Parker for first win of 2023

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - CIU women's soccer spent their Labor Day hard at work on the pitch in a Monday night contest against Brewton-Parker College. The Rams are 1-1-1 against the Barons since their first contest in 2018. CIU went unchallenged tonight, winning 4-0 over Brewton-Parker for their first win of the 2023 season.

Scoring Summary:
A Chloe Battaglia goal, assisted by Olivia Young, got the Rams on the board in the game's first eight minutes. Battaglia extended the lead to 2-0 thanks to a setup from Callie Rowe (18:38). Less than a minute later, Mercy Berkemeyer, with an assist from Mazzie Leos, found the back of the net for her first goal of the season to give the Rams a 3-0 lead before the half.

The lone goal in the second half came from Battaglia off an assist from Haley Hernandez for the first hat trick of her career.

The Rams' defense kept Brewton-Parker from taking a shot all night, while the Rams' offense was unstoppable, taking an eye-popping 30 shots. Battaglia and Berkemeyer led the way with five shots a piece, while Amber McKinley had four.

What Coach Kara Lail is saying:
"We are pleased with the performance today. We have a long week with 4 games in 9 days. We wanted to focus on today and implement our game plan. I am pleased to see Chloe step up the way she did. She has always been a force in the back, and to see her rewarded with 3 goals going forward is exciting for any defender. Overall, I feel like they stepped up, executed well, and were able to build confidence in front of the net as we head into conference play."

Up Next:  CIU women's soccer opens Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play on Thursday, Sept. 7, at 2:30 PM with a road trip to Kentucky Christian University.
