Men's Soccer collects AAC draw after second half goal

LAURINBURG, N.C. - CIU men's soccer returned to the road Tuesday night to take the pitch against St. Andrews (N.C.). The Rams were looking to bounce back after losing their first game of the season on Saturday to Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) foe Reinhardt (Ga.). The Rams were unable to get the victory, instead a second-half goal from CIU forced their third draw of the season as they tied the Knights 1-1 after 90 minutes. The Rams move to 5-1-3 overall and 3-2-1 in AAC action. 

Match Summary: Fouls highlighted the early moments of the first frame without either team being able to gain an advantage.. CIU took the first shot of the game off the head of Igor Eduardo, but the Knights keeper kept the Rams off the board. St. Andrews responded with a shot of their own that Chase Knizek saved. 

The Knights struck first (16:55) to go up 1-0. The Rams responded offensively, as Sohya Yamamoto took two corner kicks roughly 25 minutes into the contest. Marco Muhlebach attempted to capitalize off the second corner, but the keeper saved his shot. 

Deeper into the second half, Sonny Quintanilla and Romulo Barreto each took a shot that could not find the back of the net. The Rams took two more corner kicks, and Eduardo attempted a header off the second that sailed high. St. Andrews took another shot before the horn, but Knizek was stalwart in the net tallying another save. . 

The Knights led 1-0 going into the half, but Quintanilla evened the score less than a minute into the second frame. Shortly after, Mariano Calderon took a shot that the Knights' keeper collected to hold the score 1-1. 

Later in the half a shot from Yamamoto was blocked, forcing a corner kick, but the Rams could not capitalize on this scoring opportunity. Daniel Ospina took his first shot of the game, but was unable to place his attempt out of the keepers' reach.

Ismael Valverde and Yamamoto attempted to find the back of the net with ten minutes remaining, but neither could make it past Knights defense. Quintanilla took one more shot with seconds left in the game, but the score remained 1-1 as the final horn blew. 

CIU totaled 15 shots, with Barreto and Quintanilla leading with three, as Knizek posted three saves. 

Up Next: CIU is back home this Saturday, Sept. 30, to host Bryan College (Tenn.) at 3:30 p.m. EST.
