COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU softball had to travel just a few miles for their away doubleheader on Wednesday as they went head-to-head with Columbia College (S.C.). The Rams are battling for a playoff berth and are currently sitting in tenth in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC). CIU would take down the Koalas in game one 2-1 but were unable to complete the sweep coming up short 5-3 in game two.
Game One: CIU 2 CC 1: Miranda Fulmer was solid all game and held the Koalas scoreless through four innings from the circle. The Rams added the game's first run in the fourth on a Lauren Baker RBI-single. After Columbia added a run both teams were then silent through the next three innings until Margaret Schubert sent Shannon Patton home on a base hit in the top of the seventh. Two strikeouts and a groundout would win the game for the Rams in the bottom of the inning.
Box Score Notes:
- The Rams had seven hits as a team, with Schubert and Mayers each collecting two.
- Schubert (31 hits) and Mayers (41 hits) are the only two Rams with 30 or more hits on the season.
- Miranda Fulmer recorded four strikeouts on the afternoon allowing just one run helping to maintain her team-best 3.50 ERA.
Game Two: CC 5 CIU 3: A sac fly from Schubert evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the third inning, but the Koalas would again go ahead in the bottom of the inning. The Rams would again tie the game in the fourth on a double steal which brought Ally Clapp home. CIU then surged ahead on a throwing error to take a 3-2 lead. It was the last run the Rams would score, however, as they were outscored 3-0 the rest of the way.
