Doubleheader split gives CIU series win over Montreat

COLUMBIA, S.C. - After a couple of rain delays, CIU took the field on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader to close out their series against Montreat College (N.C.) The Rams had a lot of momentum going into today's games after outscoring the Cavaliers by seven and outhitting them by eight in game one of the series. CIU dropped game one of the doubleheader after a big eighth inning for Montreat but bounced back quickly and shut the Cavaliers out for the Rams' first conference series win of the season.

Game Two: CIU 11 Montreat 14: CIU found themselves in the lead early in the contest after scoring one in the first and two in the third. Montreat closed the gap to just two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Rams responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth (6-1). The Cavaliers added three more of their own in the top of the sixth after five walks and one hit. Still, CIU tacked one more on in the bottom of the inning after an RBI single from Brandt Miller scored Carter Willis, then added two more in the seventh thanks to singles from Emmanuel Maldonado and Rafael Gonzales (9-4). The Rams seemed to be in a good position to take game two of the series, but the Cavaliers scored ten runs off of five walks and six hits between three Rams pitchers. CIU cut the lead to just two runs after the eighth (14-11) but could not push anymore across to secure the win.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Miller and Willis led the Rams with three hits, including a double from Miller and a triple from Willis.
  • Gonzales, Britton Morris, and James Lovera collected two hits.
  • Four other Rams notched one hit, and four reached on a walk.

Game Three: CIU 9 Montreat 0: Both teams went down scoreless in the first three innings, but CIU came alive in the bottom of the fourth to score seven runs with two outs. Six of these came from RBI doubles by Miller and Willis and an RBI single by Joshua Hernandez. The Rams added two more in the sixth after a double from Hernandez to push Miller and Gonzales across home plate (9-0). Montreat threatened to push back in the seventh after getting bases loaded with no outs, but Hunter Garris entered the game and recorded three consecutive outs, including two strikeouts, to end the game.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Deric Hanko got the start on the mound, allowing no earned runs and striking out three in six innings.
  • Hunter Garris recorded two strikeouts in one inning pitched to close out the game.
  • Miller, Hernandez, and Morris led the Rams with two hits each, and four others collected a hit.
