CIU nearly takes series with Union after doubleheader split

COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU baseball took the field Saturday afternoon after falling behind 0-1 in their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series against Union College (Ky.) on Friday. The Rams took the first game of the day, and two wins today would have given CIU their first conference series win of the season, but a late push from Union in the day's second game handed the Bulldogs the series.

Game One: CIU 7 UC 5: Union took the lead early in the game, scoring two runs in the first two innings. However, CIU cut their lead in half (2-1) after a sac fly from Austin Paradise in the bottom of the second. The Rams took seized the advantage after scoring two more in the fourth, thanks to a two-RBI single from James Lovera. Union tied up the game in the top of the fifth, but CIU responded with four more runs of their own after four walks and a double from Britton Morris (7-3). The Bulldogs tacked on two more on in the seventh, but we could not push another runner across to take back the lead.

Box Score Highlights:

Game Two: UC 9 CIU 6: Union stayed consistent and scored in the first inning to take an early lead. CIU added two at the bottom of the second to take the lead back after three hits and a balk. However, the Bulldogs got back on top after a two-run homer in the third, and the Rams' bats were quiet until the sixth inning. Finally, CIU tacked on four runs in the sixth to take the advantage, 6-3, and it seemed as if this would seal the deal for the Rams to collect game three of the series. Union did not falter and closed the gap to just one run (6-5) with bases loaded and two outs. A grand slam gave them the 9-6 advantage, and CIU could not respond in the bottom of the seventh and dropped the series' final game.

Box Score Highlights:

  • Shane Hammonds and Gonzales led the Rams with two hits each and five RBIs combined.
  • The Rams outhit the Bulldogs 7-5, with three other players collecting one hit.
  • Deric Hanko started on the rubber and only allowed two earned runs in six innings.

Up Next: CIU travels to Greenville, S.C. on Tuesday, Mar. 14, to take the field against Bob Jones University at 6 PM. The game will be played at the Greenville Drive's Fluor Field.
