BLUFFTON, S.C. - After having their home opener postponed due to poor field conditions on Friday, CIU softball opened the 2023 season on the road Saturday. The Rams traveled southward towards the state's Lowcountry, where they would face the University of South Carolina-Beaufort (USCB). The Sand Sharks are in a unique position as they are in their first year of a transition from the NAIA to NCAA DII. It was a difficult afternoon for the Rams offensively as they dropped both games of their doubleheader with the Sand Sharks. The losses should have a minor impact on CIU's overall season outlook, however, as USCB is no longer a fellow member of the NAIA.
GAME ONE: USCB 5 CIU 0: Both teams dug their heels in defensively through the first three innings, as the only run that was scored came off a CIU error. The Sand Sharks added two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. The Rams would threaten in the sixth as Haylee Wilkerson singled to send Megan Stolzenbach to second. However, CIU was unable to capitalize as the Rams could not put any runs on the board in the contest.
Box Score Notes:
- Wilkerson led CIU with two hits, while Dallas Mayers and Stolzenbach each picked up a single.
- Mary Esterak pitched five innings with a strikeout, while Jada Cox threw one inning of relief and did not allow a hit.
GAME TWO: USCB 10 CIU 2: The Rams struck first on a single from Hallie Miller, which allowed Ashley Nash to score from second on an error by the pitcher. Unfortunately for CIU, the Sand Sharks responded by rattling off nine unanswered runs. CIU got back on the board in the top of the fourth after Margret Schubert scored off a wild pitch, but it would be the Rams' final run of the contest.
Box Score Notes:
- The Rams recorded seven hits as a team, with newcomer Ashley Nash providing the spark with two.
- Josie Self was productive at the plate for the Rams getting on base on all three of her appearances, drawing two walks, and picking up a hit.
- CIU had three different pitchers take the circle, with Catie McGovern finding the most success by picking up a strikeout in nearly three innings of action.
What Coach Sara Allen is saying: "I saw some good things today. The fact that our pitching staff only gave up one walk through two games is certainly encouraging. I also thought we had several players who were effective at the plate. Overall I think we had good team-first mindset entering today's games, but we need to add a little bit of intensity and competitive edge to that mindset if we are going to be successful."
Up Next: The Rams will face NCCAA South Region foe Carolina University (N.C.) on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 1 PM in Winston-Salem.
