Women's Basketball clash with Knights in AAC road battle

GRAYSON, Ky. - CIU women's basketball hit the court after a week and a half off to take on Kentucky Christian University on Saturday afternoon. The Knights went on a 10-0 run in the first period and held onto this lead to walk away with a 99-57 victory. CIU is now 2-6 overall and 1-5 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play.

After the Knights started with a 10-0 lead, Aubrielle Harris got the Rams on the board with a jump shot (7:30). Mariah Leinbach followed this up with two of her own to cut the score to 10-6. However, KCU began to pull away, and despite the Rams adding two more before the end of the period, CIU still trailed by 17 after one. The second period was highlighted by eight from Alayna Watkins and six from Alicia Slaughter, but the Knights still led 54-24 at the break.

KCU led by as much as 40 in the third quarter, but the Rams could muster 14 points in the period. Leinbach added two before the buzzer to bring the score to 79-38 heading into the final ten minutes. The teams were matched up more evenly in the fourth, as the Knights only outscored CIU 20-19. However, CIU prevented the Knights from surpassing the century mark to end the game at 99-57.

Leinbach led the way with 19 points, and Slaughter was just shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Harris was the third Ram in double digits with 10. Turnovers hurt the Rams as they shot 43.9% from the field, but they allowed 34 points off 26 turnovers.

Up Next: CIU hits the road on Wednesday, Dec. 6, to take on Milligan University at 5:30 p.m.
