COLUMBIA - Every player that dressed for CIU men's basketball Tuesday night found the bottom of the net as the Rams collected a resounding 89-53 win over Bluefield (Va.). The win further highlights a historic 6-1 start to the season and a 5-0 start to Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play. CIU remains the only unbeaten team in the AAC after the blowout victory.
The Rams did not hold a lead in the contest until the 12:13 mark when a jumper from Will Kelly put the Rams in front 17-16. CIU would not give up the advantage for the rest of the game. A Chrisitan Howard layup before the halftime horn gave CIU their largest lead of the half (43-27) as the Rams led by 16 at the break.
CIU continued to grow the lead and expanded it to over 30 points on another Howard finish 70-39, with 6:34 remaining. Four different non-starters hit three-pointers in the game's final six minutes as CIU siezed the 36-point win.
A CIU record 15 players scored for the Rams, with Howard leading the way, posting 12 points (5-for-5 from the field) and 10 rebounds. Kelly had his first double-digit game as a Ram, going 4-for-5 from the field with ten points. Johnny Whysong was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor with nine points and six rebounds.
The Rams won the rebound battle by a large margin, with 50 boards compared to just 30 from Bluefield. CIU shot over 50% from the field yet again and shared the ball with 17 assists as a team.
What Coach Tony Stockman is saying: "We moved the ball really well tonight, and it showed in the final score. I was pleased with the work on the glass; Christian has made a huge step forward in his rebounding ability, and this is a large part of why we have been successful. This is one of the best team wins we have had in my time at CIU. It is rare for the entire roster to score in one game, and I am proud of everyone's effort tonight."
Up Next: The Rams head to NAIA "The Show" in Kingsport, Tenn., where they will play Indiana University - Kokomo on Friday, Nov. 24, and Cumberland University (Tenn.) on Saturday, Nov. 25.
