COLUMBIA - It seems every time CIU volleyball steps on the hardwood floor at the Moore Fitness Center, history is made. The same was true on Saturday morning as the Rams swept Reinhardt (Ga.) 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-21). For the first time in program history, CIU has defeated Reinhardt twice during the Eagles' regular season. The Rams swept their AAC rival on the road back in September. CIU moves to 21-0 on the season and 12-0 in AAC play; the Eagles fall to 16-4 overall and 9-3 in the conference.
All three of Saturday's sets were hard-fought, with the Rams trailing at several points throughout the match. A massive run in the second set from the Eagles put CIU down 16-14. A back-and-forth battle ensued, but an Eagles' attack error broke the tie as the Rams pulled away to end the set on a 7-3 run. Set three held some intrigue as CIU clung to just an 18-17 lead late in the set. The hitting firepower of CIU would overwhelm the Egles as both
Kira Rymer Attaway's and
Hanah Weiss's attacks found their mark, and the Rams surged ahead for the set win.Â
Weiss followed up her notable Friday night performance with a 12-kill match on Saturday. Rymer Attaway performed at her highest level with 15 kills, hitting .500. Freshman
Gracen Norris played an important role in the Rams' gameplan yet again, collecting eight kills.Â
Lydia Gustafson continued to prove why she is one of the best middle-blockers in the NAIA, as she tallied five solo blocks, five kills, and a block assist.
Kamelia De Jesus was a dig away from a double-double with 20 assists and nine digs, while
Melissa Campos Soto made her mark with 21 assists.
Kelcey Mangum and
Alana Sanjurjo defended well against a talented offensive team in the Eagles. Sanjurjo led the way with 13 digs, while Mangum added 12.Â
What Coach Katie Weiss is saying: "Reinhardt is always a difficult team to beat, and they are loaded again this year. Our experience and resilience helped us to break open a few close sets this morning. We will look to our upperclassmen leaders to help us stay consistent as we move into the back half of the regular season."
Up Next: The Rams stay at home on Tuesday, Oct. 10, to welcome Brenau (Ga.) at 6:30 p.m. EST.Â
