LAURINBURG, N.C. - The longest active winning streak in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) rolled forward Tuesday night as CIU volleyball moved to 19-0 on the season, dispatching St. Andrews (N.C.) 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-17). The Rams move to 10-0 in the AAC, which marks the halfway point in the conference schedule. With just ten matches remaining in the season it seems unlikely that any conference foe will catch the Rams at the top of the AAC standings. Tonight's win also marked the tenth win in CIU history versus the Knights as the Rams find themselves 10-3 all-time against St. Andrews.
With a total line score of 75-32, the Knights hardly tested the Rams as CIU held St. Andrews to a .000 hitting percentage. The Knights committed 22 hitting errors as the Rams' opponent struggled to hit against the length of CIU's frontline.
Gracen Norris led CIU kills with seven, while
Hanah Weiss and
Kira Rymer Attaway each posted six kills apiece. Senior
Abbey Kleist hit .308 with five kills of her own.
Lesiray Marrero put together a career evening with four service aces and eight digs, and fellow sophomore
Kelcey Mangum led CIU with 14 digs.
11 assists came from
Kamelia De Jesus, with 19 from
Melissa Campos Soto. De Jesus aided the defensive effort with six digs, while
Gabriela Vega did her part to stop the Knight's attack with three block assists.
CIU has currently won 19 consecutive AAC regular season matches. The conference's longest win streak sits at 66 matches, which the Rams snapped when they beat Reinhardt on Oct. 9, 2021.
What Coach Katie Weiss is saying: "We have been on the road for the majority of the season, but our girls keep plugging forward. I am looking forward to getting back in front of the home crowd this weekend. We have two challenging opponents coming up, so we need to use the next two days to rest and prepare for what should be some great competition."
Up Next: The Rams have played seven of their ten conference matches on the road and finally return to the Moore Fitness Center to face Truett McConnell on Friday, Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m. EST.
