KNOXVILLE, TENN. - CIU women's soccer hit the road to take on Johnson University (Tenn.) Wednesday evening for their final regular season contest. The Rams hold a 2-0 record against the Royals since they joined the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) in 2021 and improved this to three unanswered wins after a 3-0 victory today. CIU ends the regular season 10-5-1 and 9-4-1 in AAC play. This marks the first season in program history with double-digit wins and sets the record for most conference wins.
Match Summary: CIU maintained control of the ball for most of the first half, and Lily Jackson was the first Ram to find the back of the net off an assist from Marisa Dill. Thais Roberto took her first shot of the game that the Royals' keeper hauled in, followed by a Mazzie Leos attempt that sailed high.
Jackson took the game's first corner kick, but the Rams could not capitalize on this opportunity.
Avery Long and Mercy Berkemeyer took their shot but could not get it past the keepers' hands. The Rams kept the ball in the Royals' defensive end and awarded themselves with two corner kicks from Haley Hernandez, but couldn't take advantage of this to extend their lead.
With less than two minutes remaining in the first frame, Jackson deposited another goal to give CIU a 2-0 lead thanks to a set up from Hernandez. Johnson took their first shot of the game just seconds before the buzzer, but Hailey Resitar gathered it in to keep the Royals off the board.
The Rams' offense kept firing into the second period, with Roberto and Rowe taking shots less than two minutes in. Resitar picked up another save before Hernandez scored a goal of her own off another assist from Dill to extend CIU's lead to 3-0 (60:55).
Both teams battled for possession after this until Lily Vengelis made an effort to add to the Rams' lead that the keeper handled. Five minutes later, Sydney Thoman scored her first goal of the season to give CIU a 4-0 advantage (80:14) off a pass from Vengelis.
The Rams were handed a red card at 84:14 and had to play a man down for the remainder of the match, but the Royals could not take advantage of this and strike back. CIU recorded the 4-0 win, their eighth clean sheet of the season.
Up Next: CIU awaits their final conference standing and post-season seed in the AAC Women's Soccer Tournament.
