COLUMBIA, S.C. - After taking a series against Union (Ky.) on Tuesday, the CIU softball team (21-28-1, 12-16 AAC) put themselves in a position to control their own fate in Thursday's final series of the regular season against Reinhardt University (Ga.) (32-13, 22-6 AAC). The Rams needed just one win to clinch a spot in this year's Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament in Kingsport, Tenn., next week. But unfortunately, the Rams could not take a game from the Eagles and will miss out on this year's AAC Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE: CIU 3 RU 4: Both teams brought in a run in the first inning; however, CIU took the lead in the second inning with two runs to go up 3-1. The Eagles would slowly crawl back with a run in the fourth and fifth inning to tie the game. Then, Lauren Baker sent a solo shot to left field to give the Rams the lead once again. Reinhardt answered in the seventh with two runs to retake the lead. CIU could not bring in runs in the bottom of the seventh and fell in game one 5-4.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- Lead-off hitter Kaitlynn Creel was perfect in game one, going 3-of-3 with an RBI.
- Mary Esterak got the start for the Rams in the circle, pitching six innings, allowing ten hits and a season-high seven strikeouts.
- Reinhardt outhit CIU 14-8 in game one.
GAME TWO: CIU 1 RU 3: Game two was an old-fashion pitcher's duel as neither team could put together scoring opportunities because of stout performances in the circle. The Eagles broke the silence at the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs to take the lead. CIU trimmed the lead to one in the bottom of the sixth inning. However, Reinhardt pushed their lead back to two with another run in the seventh. CIU came up to bat needing at least two runs to keep their AAC Tournament bid hopes alive but couldn't muster those runs, dropping the series to Reinhardt with a 3-1 loss in game two.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- Julia Thielen went the distance in the circle, allowing only seven hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts.
- CIU had four total hits in the game, including a triple from Tanaya Ellis. The triple is the tenth triple of Ellis' career which is the most in program history.
- Kaitlynn Creel notched her 45th hit of the season, including four this series, which leads the team.
What Coach Sara Allen is saying:
"Today was a fantastic day of softball. Heartbreaking to lose, but super fun to play. This group of ball players has so much to be proud of in how much they've grown as competitors and as a team. We've improved in every category this year, and our 10 1-run losses prove that we're just a couple adjustments away from being a team that wins a lot of games. I'm really looking forward to see how we come back fresh for the NCCAA South Region tournament in a couple of weeks. If we take everything we've learned over the course of the season and play the way we have been, it should be an exciting tournament!"
Up Next:
The Rams will host the NCCAA South Region Tournament on May 3-5.
