CIU Softball posts two shutouts against Bluefield on Senior Day

COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU Softball began their final home stretch of the regular season as they took the field for a battle with Bluefield College (Va.). Today, CIU Softball celebrated the first four-year senior class on senior day. The Rams played complimentary softball with shutouts in both outings to sweep Bluefield and claim their second straight Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series win. The two wins mark the first AAC series shut-out in program history. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

GAME ONE CIU 1 BC 0: There was not much action for most of the game, as each team's pitchers and defense held the opponent's offense to very little success. The Rams came alive in the sixth inning as Hallie Miller would single to left field to bring in the game's first and only run. CIU would waste no time securing the game one win 1-0, with three straight outs in Bluefield's final at-bat.

BOX SCORE NOTES: 

  • Tanaya Ellis led the way for the Rams with two hits. 
  • Hallie Miller brought in the games only run with a single in the sixth.
  • Cissy Doolittle claimed her second straight win in the circle as she pitched a shutout while allowing only four hits with six strikeouts. 

GAME TWO: CIU 8 BC 0: The Rams opened game two with a run in the first inning. After neither team got anything going in the second inning, CIU's offense began to come on. The Rams scored two runs in the third and fourth innings. Then, after scoring three runs in the fifth inning, Tanaya Ellis roped a single to right field to bring in two runs, ending the game 8-0 by run rule. 

BOX SCORE NOTES: 

  • Senior Tanaya Ellis was a force at the plate, going 3-of-4 with two RBIs.
  • Hallie Miller brought in two more runs in game two after bringing in the only run in game one. 
  • Julia Thielen earned her second straight win in the circle, allowing only two hits with four strikeouts. 

What Coach Sarah Allen is saying: 
"Today was probably the best complete day we've had as a team, and it's special that it happened on our Senior day. It was a great day in every aspect -The weather cleared up great, we had a beautiful senior ceremony, the crowd supporting us was wonderful and the softball was phenomenal. It's neat to watch this program grow and I'm thankful for the great support we have from the CIU community and our families."
Up Next:
CIU will be back at home against Union College (Ky.) this coming Tuesday with a doubleheader starting at 2 PM.
