AVE MARIE, FLA. - CIU Softball continued spring break play down in Florida this afternoon with a two-game series against Ave Maria University (Fla.). CIU looked to get back in the win column after falling in their last five outings. The Rams fell in game one 9-1 but were able to take the second game from the Gyrenes 5-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE: CIU 1 AMU 9: Both teams were quiet through the first three innings in game one until Ave Maria brought in four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to get things going. The Rams would have no answer as the Gyrenes would add five more runs in their final two at-bats. CIU got on the board with a run in the bottom top of the sixth inning, but it was too little too late for the Rams as they fell 9-1.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- Three of the Rams' five hits came in the first inning, but resulted in no runs brought in.
- Megan Stolzenbach was responsible for two of those five hits in game one.
- Mary Esterak and Julia Thielen combined to allow only nine hits, and nine runs, all of which were earned.
GAME TWO: CIU 5 AMU 1: CIU's bats came alive to start game two with three runs scored in the first inning. Ave Maria would answer with one run in their first at-bat, but after that run, it was all CIU. The Rams added two insurance runs in the fourth inning and held the Gyrenes to no more runs thanks to stout pitching from Cissy Doolitte along with great defense behind her, resulting in a 5-1 victory.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- The middle of the lineup was the most productive for the Rams in game two, as the fourth and fifth hitters, Lauren Baker and Shannon Patton, had two hits and an RBI.
- Cissy Doolittle earned the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings, allowing only eight hits with four strikeouts and no earned runs.
What Coach Sara Allen is saying:
"We played really great softball today. It was very fun to watch! We're finally starting to get into our groove as a team. The pitching was solid, the defense made fantastic plays, and we had timely hitting to score the runs we needed. I'm looking forward to watching this team continue to produce good softball!"
