Rams held off by Bulldogs in conference contests

COLUMBIA, S.C. - After splitting the series with Keiser University (Fla.) the night before, CIU Softball (10-10, 2-2 AAC) returned to the field for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) showdown with Tennessee Wesleyan University (9-1, 6-0 AAC). Unfortunately, the Rams could not consistently string together runs the entire series, dropping both games on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME ONE: CIU 1 TWU 7: TWU came out the gate swinging with three quick runs to lead things off. The Rams would hold off the Bulldogs in the next two innings; however, TWU added two more to make the score 5-0 in the fourth inning. CIU's only run would come in their following at-bat, but the Bulldogs added on two runs in the top of the sixth to make the final score 7-1.

BOX SCORE NOTES:

  • The Rams were able to muster five hits in game one.
  • Catie McGovern pitched the entire seven innings and finished with four strikeouts and only three earned runs.
  • Shannon Patton reached base twice with two hits and a run scored.

GAME TWO: CIU 0 TWU 6: The second game of the doubleheader started off as a pitcher's duel. After giving up one run in the first inning, the Ram's defense led by pitcher Mary Esterak settled in to hold off a talented Bulldog lineup. However, due to outstanding pitching from the TWU starter Madison Scott, the Rams were unable to put runs on the board. TWU eventually added on five more runs to close out the game with a 6-0 series-clinching win.

BOX SCORE NOTES:

  • Mary Esterak got the nod in game two giving up six earned runs with one strikeout in seven innings of action.

What Coach Sara Allen is saying:
"I saw a lot of good things today, but the bottom line is Tennessee Wesleyan just played better. They had the best movement pitchers we've seen this spring and we struggled to make offensive adjustments. It's a good learning experience that will hopefully make us better as we continue to grow into our best competitive softball."

Up Next:
CIU will head to Hialeah, Fla., for a midweek series against Florida National University on Tuesday, March 8, starting at 2 PM.
