MONTREAT, N.C. - CIU baseball played an Appalachian Athletic Conference series-opening doubleheader Friday as they split two games with Montreat College (20-16, 7-10). A hard-fought game one would end in an 8-4 CIU victory while the Rams had a comeback fall short in game two as they lost to the Cavaliers 8-7. After Friday's results, the Rams are now 12-23 overall and 3-12 in the AAC.
GAME ONE: CIU 8 MC 4: After an RBI-single from Robert Bell put the Rams on the board in the first inning, Shane Hammonds recorded his first home run of the season as the McBee native gave CIU a 3-1 fourth inning advantage. Montreat clawed their way back on a three-run homer to take a 4-3 lead, but Joshua Hernandez answered with a home run of his own to tie the contest in the eighth inning (4-4). A series of errors by the Cavaliers in the tenth and a two-RBI single off the bat of Kody Trujillo put the Rams up 8-4. The four-run lead was too much for the Cavaliers to overcome as CIU got the win.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- Justin Parish threw seven innings, tallying eight strikeouts. Peyton Evans finished the game on the mound recording the win allowing only one hit in three innings.
- Joshua Hernandez went 3-for-5 at the plate, with his lone RBI coming off a solo home run.
- Shane Hammonds notched his first home run of the season off his only hit in five at-bats.
GAME TWO: MC 8 CIU 7 (7-Innings): Spurned on by a Britton Morris RBI-double, CIU jumped out to a 4-1 lead through the first three innings. However, the Cavalier bats would get going, and CIU trailed by as much as 7-4 before the Rams cut the deficit to 7-6 in the sixth inning. Then still down by a run with two outs in the top of the seventh Shane Hammonds stepped up yet again with a hit to right field that would go down as an RBI-single. CIU was unable to hold off the Cavaliers in the bottom of the inning as the Ram's conference foe would win the contest on an error (8-7).
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- Britton Morris went 2-for-4 with an RBI-double while reaching base on balls once.
- Shane Hammonds continued to play well, going 1-for-3 with two RBI's
- The Rams put four players on the mound, with Brett Collins highlighting the group as the junior threw 3.1 innings, giving up no runs and notching three strikeouts.
