Baseball trips up No. 21 Bluefield for 6-3 victory

BLUEFIELD, Va. - Despite being a few games below .500, CIU baseball has picked up several impressive wins so far this season and picked up another one on Friday as the Rams knocked off No. 21 Bluefield (Va.) 6-3. The win gives CIU their third win over a ranked opponent this season and is critical to helping the Rams make progress as they try to move up the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) standings. The victory moves CIU to 2-11 in the AAC and 11-20 overall, while Bluefield falls to 17-3 overall and 8-3 in the conference.

CIU jumped out to a quick two-run lead in the first inning off a Buddy Bleasdale RBI-single and a score off a wild pitch. The Rams extended that advantage to 3-0 on a Jan Maldonado RBI-single before the side was retired. Justin Parish and company kept the Bluefield offense in check as the Rams added runs off a Joshua Hernandez sac-fly and a Bleasdale RBI-double to grow the lead to 5-1 in the fourth. After Bluefield battled back to trim the deficit to 5-3, Kody Trujillo gave the Rams one more on an RBI single to cap off the ninth inning. No runs were scored in the bottom of the ninth as CIU snagged the 6-3 win.

BOX SCORE NOTES:

  • Justin Parish pitched eight innings as he notched the win while garnering an impressive nine strikeouts and only one earned run. Rodrigo Rodriguez recorded his first save of the year as he closed out the ninth for the Rams.
  • Veterans Buddy Bleasdale and Kody Trujillo were key pieces for CIU. Bleasdale went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a double, while Trujillo hit .750 in four-at bats and picked up an RBI of his own.
