DUE WEST, S.C. - Coming off an opening day win on Saturday, CIU Softball looked to keep things rolling with a midweek doubleheader against in-state NCAA Division II foe Erskine College. However, the Rams were unable to hold off the Flying Fleet's bats on falling 11-2 in game one and 15-7 in game two.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE: CIU 2 EC 11: CIU got off to an early two-run lead in the third inning as neither team could develop runs in the first two innings. Taylor Allen and Lauren Baker would reach as Allen was hit by a pitch and Baker was walked. Then, Tanaya Ellis connected on a ball sending it to right field for a triple, scoring Allen and Baker. This would be the only runs the Rams could manufacture in game one. Erskine would bring in 11 unanswered runs in the next three innings to claim the victory 11-2.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- Senior outfielder Tanaya Ellis was a bright spot for the Rams, recording a hit and two runs batted in.
- Three pitchers saw time in the circle for the Rams, including Cissy Doolittle, Miranda Fulmer, and Kendall Parker with each pitcher allowing only two hits during their time in the circle.
GAME TWO: CIU 7 EC 15: Erskine got going early in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning. However, CIU would respond with three runs of their own in the second inning. With two runners on base, Heaven Zamora would blast a homer over the right-field wall. However, Erskine would continue to bring in runs in third, extending their lead to 9-3. In a last-second effort, the Rams put together four runs in the top of the 6th inning thanks to a single by Drye bringing in a run and a Josie Self three-run homer, but it was not enough as the Flying Fleet would tack on six more runs in their next at-bat. As a result, CIU would drop the second game of the doubleheader 15-7.
BOX SCORE NOTES:
- The Ram's bats came alive in game two as they would finish the game with nine hits and seven runs.
- Macey Drye and Margaret Schubert made the most of their at-bats, with both recording two hits.
- In her only time at the plate, Josie Self did not disappoint, hitting a home run and recording three RBI's.
- Junior third baseman Heaven Zamora had an impressive performance at the plate, with a three-run homer of her own.
What Coach Sara Allen is saying:
"Today was a good wake up call for us competitively. Playing successful teams like Erskine is good for us early in the season because they show us what we have to do in order to win consistently. There's no doubt that we can compete with them, but we didn't show it in all aspects of the game today. I am very pleased with our offense and the approaches we're taking at the plate, we just need to show up more intentionally on defense and in the circle."
Up Next:
CIU will host Carolina University on Friday, Feb. 11, for their first two game-series of 2022 at the CIU Softball Field. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 PM.
