Softball sweeps Royals to open conference play

COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU softball took on Johnson University (Tenn.) for their first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series of the season on Saturday. The Rams entered the contest at 7-7 on the season and aimed to start AAC play with a series win at home. The Rams ground out a 12 inning win in game one, and comfortably defeated the Royals in game two to secure the sweep.

GAME ONE (12 INNINGS): CIU 9 JU 8: CIU started hot with a solid 3-0 lead in the first three innings. However, the Royals would put together a six-run fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead. The Rams were forced to battle back and certainly did that, scoring three runs in the next two innings. However, the game extended into extra innings, and the Rams found themselves down 8-7 in the bottom of the 12th inning. With runners in scoring position, Megan Stolzenbach would single to bring in a run, and then the Royals proceeded to walk the next two batters handing CIU the victory.

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Tanaya Ellis had some crucial plays at the plate, recording five hits and one RBI.
  • Kendall Parker also made the most of her at-bats in game one, with four hits and an RBI.
  •  Cissy Doolittle earned the win in the circle, only allowing three hits with season-high ten strikeouts in eight innings.
  • The Rams had a whopping 21 hits against the Royals.

GAME TWO: CIU 10 JU 3: After giving up the first run in the second inning, CIU would take the lead with two runs in their ensuing at-bat and never looked back. The Rams would add on eight runs, including a five-run fifth inning, to cruise to a 10-3 win to close out the series on top.

BOX SCORE NOTES:

  • Shannon Patton was a perfect 2-2 at the plate with two hits and an RBI.
  • Catie McGovern got the start in game two, giving up eight hits but only two earned runs to get the win.

What Coach Sara Allen is saying:

"We did a lot of things today that showed maturity and tenacity as a team, and I'm very pleased with how we're continuing to grow and be intentional about playing competitive softball. I'm especially happy with how our pitching staff stepped up and gave us the opportunity to win. We kept the pressure on Johnson all day at the plate and made some spectacular defensive plays to shut down potential big innings. It's great to start conference play 2-0!"

Up Next: CIU steps out of conference for a two-game series at home with Keiser University on Mar. 4 starting at 4 PM.
