CIU falls to Point despite a high scoring fourth quarter

COLUMBIA, S.C. – CIU women's basketball hit the road on Tuesday afternoon to take on Point University (Ga.) after two important Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) wins last week. The Rams took down the Skyhawks last season for the first time in program history, but tonight they fell 67-61 after a slow start to the first half.

Point took the lead less than 15 seconds into the game and held it for the entirety of the game's 40 minutes. The Rams' defense was unable to hold off the Skyhawks' who scored 22 points in the first period holding the Rams to eight points in the first ten minutes. The second quarter looked much like the first, as the Rams continued to struggle to find the bottom of the net and trailed 36-15 going into the half.

The third quarter seemed to be more promising for the Rams, as they outscored Point 14-13 and improved their shooting percentage from the first half. CIU exploded on both ends of the floor in the fourth. The Rams grabbed eight rebounds, had six steals, and scored 32 points–half of those coming from Somarian Webb. However, it would not be enough to ultimately overcome the Skyhawks.

Webb led the way in the scoring column with a season-high of 23 points. The freshman also grabbed five rebounds and collected three steals.  Jaylyn Twitty also scored a season high of 12 points against the Skyhawks. Tearra Cook remains a constant threat on both offense and defense, with 12 points and nine rebounds.

As a team, the Rams grabbed 35 rebounds and forced 11 turnovers. CIU was not as strong offensively as they have been, going 22-of-72 (30.6%) from the field and 4-of-17 (23.5%) from behind the arc.

What Coach Danielle Fleming is saying: "Not the best first half for us. Still, we fought until the end, and it was great to see that from our freshmen! Still have one more game before the break. We're going to lock in to get that win!"

Up Next: The Rams stay on the road and travel to Thomas University (Ga.) on Thursday, Dec. 15, at 3:00 PM for their final contest of 2022. CIU is now 6-7 on the season and 5-5 in conference play.
