KINGSPORT, Tenn. - CIU men's basketball played the first game of NAIA "The Show" on Friday, defeating Washington Adventist (Md.) by a score of 76-73. "The Show" is held at the MeadowView Conference Resort & Convention Center in Kingsport and showcases some of the best programs for men's and women's basketball in the NAIA. Friday's win for the Rams came in the first all-time meeting between CIU and the Shock as the Rams move to 4-3 overall this season.
It was a back-and-forth first half, with CIU trailing WAU 43-41 at the break. In the first 20 minutes of the contest, DiAnthony Heathcock led the Rams with nine points, while CIU also saw a spark off the bench as Jaylon Jeter came off the pine to score seven first-half points.
CIU trailed by as much as six, 55-49, with 14:33 left in regulation, but it would be the last time the Shock held a sizable lead as the Rams outplayed their opponent down the stretch. A 3-pointer from Jalen Brinson put CIU up 65-63 at the 6:30 mark, and the Rams would not look back. A tough bucket in the paint from Christian Howard gave the Rams a 69-63 advantage, and then clutch free throws from Skyler McKinney closed the game out as CIU got the non-conference win.
McKinney led the Rams in scoring with 18 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the field and 50% from deep. McKinney completed a double-double by adding ten rebounds to his stat line. DiAnthony Heathcock scored 11 points while adding six boards, and Christian Howard was the Rams' third player with double-digit points, collecting 14. Jalen Brinson was a catalyst for the Rams offensively, with seven points and seven assists. As a team, CIU was wise in their 3-point shot selection, going 7-of-15 from beyond the arc.
Coach Tony Stockman: "The Show is an awesome event, and we are happy to be here and give our players this holiday tournament experience. We are proud of the defensive effort our guys showed today; it was the key to us winning this game."
Up Next: The Rams will take on Trinity International (Ill.) on day two of the showcase on Saturday, Nov. 26, at 6 PM in Kingsport.
